Just discovered!

I just found out that Paris has a plant right in the city, a few km away from the Eiffel Tower, next to the river Isséane. The plant is also called that. It's a perfect example of a plant integrated within the city, and the perfect comparison to NYC. Definitely gonna include that in my presentation! :)

7/27/11

I just replied to all the girl's emails, and asked them for a confirmation of when they can help out.
Later I'm going to print a few more copies of the East Flushing flyer, and then distribute them at the library~

old news from 7/22/11 (that I forgot to put up)

7/22/11
  • I made flyers for East Flushing library and then went to the library to distribute the flyers. Surprisingly, almost all the parents I talked to wanted their kid to go to the workshop. I'm thinking of doing this at other libraries so that I'd get more kids to come :)

7/19/2011

Things I still need to do.

  • make programs
  • call more girls for help
  • make magazine bowl
  • make permission slips

7/18/2011

Pomonok.

Went to Pomonok to give them two flyers. I edited it with a librarian named Lavina (put the library logo on) and then printed 25 copies each.

7/16/2011

First flyer!

I made my first flyer today~
I went to Fresh Meadows library to give it to Jillian, and then went back later to see the changes she made and make the final version. She also gave me magazines to make the example magazine craft in~

7/11/2011

SO MUCH TODAY :D

So this morning I looked up crafts to do with magazines, and found a bunch! Then I went to the city to see my Columbia mentor, and learned more about WTE. I think I'm gonna start drafting my powerpoint soon~

When I got back, my mom took me to four different library branches: Hillcrest, Pomonok, Bayside, and East Flushing, in that order. Well, actually we went to Fresh Meadows first, and I confirmed with Jillian what day I was gonna give the workshop, and she informed me on what I needed to do :) Hillcrest looked desolate, so we went to Pomonok, but the childrens librarian, Sharon Banks, was at dinner, so they told me to come back in an hour. So we went to Bayside, but Bayside was a super popular place, and they were booked :/ So we tried East Flushing, and it was so easy to get a room there  :D and Flo (librarian) was super easy going and nice :) After, we went back to Pomonok, and I talked to Sharon. We decided on two days, one for each aspect, cause we couldn't squeeze it in on one day. This was Ms. Banks's idea. She was super helpful! :D
So now I'm all booked :)

Workshop ideas draft #1

Workshop

Goals
  1. Encourage to recycle
  2. Give them ideas to recycle
  3. explain why recycling is good an littering is bad
  4. Introduce WTE
Ideas
  • Do Now: ask what they think recycling is, and what are stuff they do to recycle. (let them write it on a board)
  • Recycling Activity: According to a pamphlet, pick up garbage and throw into the appropriate bin.
  • Ways to turn “garbage” into something fun :D
  • Donate clothes and toys
  • Self-contribution: Demonstrate a list of things kids can do to help minimize energy usage. Or do a simulation (ex. Make a (picture of a) room will no one in it but lights are on.)
  • Simplify WTE: build a box with two ends. One end put garbage in, other end have lightbulb. Drop garbage in, lightbulb lights up. Add sounds :)

Garbage à Toys Ideas
  • can à pencil holder
  • plastic bottle à vase
Self-contribution list:
  • Make a (picture of a) room with lights on
  • Trash can with garbage around it
  • Computer is on, mom calls for lunch/dinner, computer left on
  • Brush teeth, water left on
  • End of school, throwing school notes out

7/7/11- update

Today, I went to Columbia University again to see Ranjith.
Afterwards I went to Fresh Meadows library to talk to Jillian about the workshop and presentation.

7/06/2011

updates again!

7/5/11 (yesterday)

  • went to Columbia University to see my mentor, Ranjith. I told him about my project, and some ideas I had for the workshop for kids. He said it was good and advised me to look into recycling programs already present; he knew some were going on in Europe.

7/6/11 (today)

  • called Cunningham park and Raymond O'Connor Park Day Camps
  • The Cunningham Park man who answered was very helpful and addition to giving me the day camp number, recommended me to call Urban Rangers b/c he thought they could help :)
  • Called CP's Day Camp, and the lady was rude. She said, "Oh, there's already a girl scout troop coming in, we don't need another one." Excuse me? Just b/c we're all girl scouts doesn't mean that we're doing the same project. Geez.
  • Called Ray O'Connor but no one picked up :/
  • I think I'm just not going to do the parks and day camps, because that mainly focuses on little kids, which wasn't my original intent.

  • biked to Windsor Park Library and arranged a date to do the workshop and presentation with Ms. Julia Tan, the supervisor. August 4th! :)
  • biked to Fresh Meadows Library to talk with Jillian, but she said that she didn't get a chance to talk to Ms. Julia Hua yet, so I'd have to come back tmrw~

7/02/2011

updates updates!

Yesterday (7/1/11)
I went to Windsor Park Library to ask to book a room. A librarian told me to come back Wednesday to see Julia Tan, the supervisor.

Today (7/2/11)
I talked to Jillian in the Fresh Meadows Library, and she took my proposal and read it over. Then she gave me the name of the supervisor, Julia Hua, and said that she would talk to her. She asked me when I planned on giving the events (workshop+presentation), and I told her around early/mid-August. She informed me that the best time for the library to hold it would be a Tuesday or Thursday, but most likely Tuesday. So I'm aiming for the 2nd of August now and pushing my plans a little faster :)

6/30/2011

Future plans for this week!

7/1/11 (tmrw)
  • call up Central Library and Brie
  • go to another library
  • email the parks (Kissena, Cunningham, Bayside, Alley Pond Environmental Center)
  • plan out rough outlines of workshop and presentation

UPDATES :D

I need to learn to update every time something happens. Anyways.

6/23/11
I went to Manhattan to meet with my Columbia mentor, Ranjith. He said that he'll be around for the summer (yay!) and I hope that he can give me good feedback on my powerpoints and workshop ideas :)

6/24/11
I had a meeting with my two project advisors, Pauline and Lien Ling. We met at Lien Ling's house. I showed them my plan (in the previous posts) and explained them in a little more detail. The meeting was pretty fast (only around 30 min) b/c I basically had everything down. They just advised me to get waivers/contracts(?) in case something happened.

6/25/11
I went to the Fresh Meadows library and asked them about booking a room. The person I'm supposed to see, Jillian (childrens coordinator) told me to type up a proposal first and then give it to her.

6/28/11
I wrote the proposal.

6/30/11 (today)
I went to Central Library in Jamaica today. Unfortunately, the people that I needed to talk to (supervisors) were done for the day, even though the library closes at 9. But instead, I talked to this really nice librarian named Brie, and she said that she'll definitely contact me back! ^___^

6/22/2011

List of possible places to ask.

  • libraries (Fresh Meadows, Central, Manhattan) [workshops]
  • park & recreation centers (Kissena, Central Park, Bayside) [workshops]
  • community centers [presentations]

6/21/2011

062111 (Tues)

  • made a plan! see previous post.
  • emailed Lien Ling and Pauline and asked for a meeting on Friday to discuss my plans.
  • called the head of all queens libraries, and got directed to the programs director. she told me the process to book a room in each branch; it was simpler than I expected! I just have to go to the branches and ask for a room... LOLOL.
